According to data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Americans may have finally reached their peak of obesity.
As per these numbers, the rate of obesity has remained constant for at least five years among men and ten years for women and children. This time period is long enough for health experts to conclude that the percentage of very overweight people has leveled off.
However, the percentages have increased by very high numbers. Nearly 34 percent of adults are obese, which is more than double the percentage 30 years ago and the number of obese children have tripled during this time.
Dr. William H. Dietz, director of the division of nutrition, said “Right now we’ve halted the progress of the obesity epidemic. The data are really promising. I don’t think we have in place the kind of policy or environmental changes needed to reverse this epidemic just yet.”
Some experts were not convinced that the leveling off was a result of improved eating and exercise habits.
