YouTube expands HD viewing options

Announcing its launch of a new landing page, YouTube elaborated that the page - marking an expansion of the capabilities of its HD player - would corral all the high-definition video uploaded to the site.

With the new page, YouTube's HD player now launches in a widescreen window that takes up the majority of the browser window. This means when a viewer selects "Watch in HD" for any video that is hi-def-enabled, the video will immediately start playing in the wide-screen HD format.

It was only as recently as last month that the site began expanding the viewable width of all videos appearing on it, thereby creating an image like that of with a movie theater screen or high-definition television.

YouTube has also introduced new capabilities to its e-commerce tools already available in the US, allowing users in the UK to click from YouTube music videos to download songs from Apple's iTunes store.

On a company blog, YouTube explained that also in the site's testing process are three new landing pages, dedicated to the popular categories of news, movies, and music. Related to the mentioned categories, each page will be populated with the most popular content on the site.

While the news page will feature breaking stories from all over the world, and news drawn from the Google News service; the music page will have rising videos and playlists dedicated to different genres; and the movies page will showcase some of the most popular short and full-length movies.
