Removal of fibroids to be hassle free
magnetic resonance-guided ultrasound surgery machine

There is finally good news for women with fibroids. Now, non-invasive magnetic resonance-guided ultrasound surgery machine (MRgFUS) would do away with surgery for treating fibroids.

Jaslok Hospital has launched MRgFUS where women can get rid of fibroids in just four hours.

Dr Ravi Ramakant, head of radiology in KEM Hospital, however said that the treatment was expensive and was being over-hyped. It would also not suit some patients.

Dr W M Gedroyc, a London-based doctor, has an 80 per cent success rate after performing this surgery on about 500 women. He said, "When high intensity ultrasound is focused on the fibroid, the temperature can be raised high enough to destroy it.”

Dr Shrinivas Desai, director of radiology in Jaslok Hospital, informed that the process would be available by February in Mumbai and would cost less than a normal laparoscopic procedure.

Dr Gedroye also informed that there are reports that state that this procedure can even remove liver tumors. In Japan, findings are on to ascertain whether this procedure can treat prostrate and breast cancer too.
