Over 300 Caritas local staff are giving life-giving assistance to the quake-hit Haiti despite difficulties.
Caritas has been delivering necessary stuff like tarpaulins, blankets and eatables. To assist the survivors of the quake Caritas coordination centres have also been established with many of the staff working. To provide food to the survivors about 23 food distribution points have been established at Port-au-Prince and two more in the badly hit Jachmel district.
Volunteers are busy packing boxes filled up with food for about 50,000 people. About 5,000 boxes have been distributed at Port-au Prince.
Catholic Relief Services, and affiliate of the US based Caritas affiliate, is soon about to receive more food stuff in the coming hours.
Catholic Relief Services is preparing food for the neighboring Dominican Republic, that includes sardines, five-gallon buckets of juice, peanut butter, nuts, sausages, granola bars, black beans, canned fruit and saltine crackers. Other important necessities that are already dispatched to Haiti are water storage containers, mosquito nets, water purification tablets and hygiene kits.
Appreciating the work of Caritas staff Jack de Groot CEO of Caritas Australia said, "The work of the Caritas local staff on the ground has been incredible despite the many challenges they face. Yet the compassion and commitment of our people to continue to work both day and night to deliver the life-giving assistance they are providing, is truly inspiring."
