Japanese firms' pretax earnings plunge

TOKYO, Dec. 4 -- Japanese companies' pretax earnings in the July-September quarter went down 22.4 percent from the same period of last year, the Finance Ministry said Thursday.

It was the biggest drop in about seven years, the ministry said, blaming the global economic slowdown.

Avnet acquires Japan-based Nippon Denso Industry

Avnet, Inc., a fortune 500 Company, has entered into an agreement to acquire Nippon Denso Industry Co., Ltd. (NDI) of Japan, for an undisclosed amount.

The acquisition will be completed through Avnet Japanese subsidiary, named ‘Avnet Japan Co., Ltd’.

Cuts proposed in yellow fin tuna catch

An international ocean resources group wants a 30 percent cut in the yellow fin tuna catch in the Pacific to curb over fishing, sources told Kyodo news Monday.

The proposal was made by the secretariat of the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission, whose members include Japan, the United States, China, South Korea, Taiwan and the European Union.
