Verizon versions of Google Pixel will get all updates “simultaneously” with non-Verizon models
According to an Ars report, citing a Verizon spokesperson, the Verizon versions of Google's new Pixel and Pixel XL handsets will apparently get all major updates at the same time as the Pixels sold by Google.
The report evidently addresses concerns that Verizon may stand in the way of major updates for the Pixel and Pixel XL handsets, which will be sold carrier unlocked by the company.
The concerns about slow, delayed major updates to Verizon versions of the Google Pixel smartphones stemmed from a recent disclosure by Google that all Pixel models will receive monthly security updates from Google, but "system updates will be managed by Verizon for Verizon models, and Google for unlocked models bought from Google Store."
To assuage concerns related to system updates for Verizon versions of Google Pixel smartphones, the Verizon spokesperson told Ars that all operating system and security updates rolled out for Pixel handsets "will happen in partnership with Google." As such, whenever an update is released by Google for Pixel handsets, the Verizon versions of the device will also receive "the same update at the same time."
The assertion by the Verizon spokesperson has also been substantiated by Google. In a statement released to Ars, Google said that OS updates and monthly security patches for all Pixel handsets -- Verizon and non-Verizon versions -- will be rolled out "simultaneously."
